This June, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my very first Rotary International Convention in Taipei, Taiwan. As a new member of the SLC chapter of the Rotary Club, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the experience exceeded every expectation I had. It was also my first visit to Taiwan, making the trip even more memorable. I was especially grateful to share the experience with my two sons, Gio and Balam, who joined me and had the opportunity to see Rotary in action on a truly global scale.
My First Rotary International Convention: A Global Experience in Taipei
The convention brought together approximately 38,000 Rotarians from more than 140 countries, creating an atmosphere unlike anything I have ever experienced. Everywhere we looked, there were people proudly wearing pins, banners, and traditional clothing representing their countries. It was inspiring to see so many individuals united by a common purpose: making a difference through service and building friendships across cultures.
One of the highlights for me was attending the general sessions at the Taipei Dome. The keynote speakers shared inspiring stories of service, innovation, and hope while celebrating the incredible impact Rotary members have around the world. The energy in the stadium was contagious, and it was impossible not to leave feeling motivated to do even more in our own communities.
I also enjoyed participating in several breakout sessions throughout the convention. These workshops covered a wide range of topics, including membership growth, leadership development, public image, youth engagement, peacebuilding, environmental sustainability, and successful service projects from clubs around the world. I came away with practical ideas that I hope we can incorporate into our own chapter, as well as a renewed appreciation for the creativity and dedication of Rotary members everywhere.
Another unforgettable part of the convention was the House of Friendship, which truly lived up to its name. This enormous exhibit hall was filled with Rotary projects, international fellowships, humanitarian organizations, vendors, and displays representing clubs and districts from across the globe. It was the perfect place to exchange ideas, discover new projects, and connect with fellow Rotarians. Walking through the exhibits felt like taking a trip around the world in a single afternoon.
One of my favorite parts of the convention was the unexpected friendships and connections that happened along the way. While having breakfast at our hotel one morning, I happened to bump into Dr. Scott Leckman. We had a wonderful conversation, and I also had the pleasure of meeting his lovely wife. It was such a small-world Rotary moment.
As I was exploring the House of Friendship, I also met the president-elect of our neighboring Park City Rotary chapter along with her two adorable children. It was wonderful to connect with fellow Utah Rotarians halfway around the world and be reminded that Rotary truly feels like one big family, no matter where you are.
I was especially happy that Gio and Balam were able to experience the convention with me. They attended portions of the conference, met Rotarians from many different
countries, and witnessed firsthand the scale of Rotary's international impact. I hope the experience inspired them to continue serving others and showed them the incredible opportunities that Rotary provides to build friendships, develop leadership skills, and make a difference around the world.
I returned home inspired, energized, and proud to be a Rotarian. Attending my first Rotary International Convention reminded me that Rotary is so much more than our weekly meetings—it is a global network of people committed to service, leadership, and friendship. I am grateful for the experience and already look forward to attending my next Rotary International Convention.
