What is Rotary?

That's a very common question. While most people have heard of the Rotary Club, many don't have a clear understanding of what it is or what it does. Hopefully, this website will help.

Rotary International

A young attorney named Paul Harris formed the first Rotary Club in Chicago on September 23, 1905. It was organized as a place where business and professional leaders could gather in friendship to provide community service. The first group met in rotation at the various business locations of individual Club members. This led to the name "Rotary".

The Rotary emblem is a strong-geared wheel designed for service and heavy duty. Rotary has no secrets, no rituals, few forms and few rules. Since 1905, individuals of practically every nationality and religion have embraced the ideals established by that first Club. Today, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 31,000 Rotary Clubs located in 166 countries.

The Objectives of Rotary

Rotary was formed to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. In doing so, Rotary promotes these:

  • First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
  • Second: High ethical standards in business and profession; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
  • Third: The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life.
  • Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, good will and peace through a world fellowship of business and professionals, united in the ideal of service.

Rotarian’s Opportunities and Obligations

Rotary operates on the idea that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. As a result, specific expectations for all Rotary members have been established:

  • Rotarians should attend at least 60 percent of all meetings. If a member cannot attend because of business or health reasons, participating in any local, regional, national or international Rotary meeting can make up attendance.
  • Rotarians should wear their lapel pins at all times and their name badges at Rotary meetings.
  • All Rotarians are to be addressed by their first names.
  • Membership is a one-time fee of $300.
  • Membership expenses are $1,449.00 per year. This includes annual membership dues as well as yearly contributions to the Salt Lake Rotary Foundation, the Rotary International Foundation, and weekly luncheon fees. Additional expenses are incurred by attending Club social activities.
  • All members are encouraged to attend and participate in the annual Rotary District Conference. The Conference involves Rotarians from 40 Clubs throughout Utah. The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City is in District 5420.
  • Rotarians are expected to give of their time and talents in the Club’s committee assignments, community work and social functions.
  • To keep abreast of Rotary events and news items, members should read the Rotary Bee, Club 24's monthly newsletter, and The Rotarian, Rotary International’s monthly magazine. Both publications are sent to each member’s mailing address.

The Four Way Test

Being a member of this established service organization is an honor and a privilege, and as a result, all Rotarians must follow the Four-Way Test in their personal and professional lives as well as when planning Rotary activities.

Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

In addition to the Four-Way test, the organization’s motto is:
“Service Above Self.”
