Salt Lake City Rotary Foundation
The Salt Lake City Rotary Foundation is one of the best-kept Rotary secrets! In March of 1977, Clayton R. Williams, Past President of the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City, attended a Rotary meeting in Chicago for the incoming presidents of the larger Rotary Clubs in the United States. At that meeting, he found that the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City was the only one of the larger Clubs that did not have its own Foundation. After the Chicago meeting, Clayton returned to Salt Lake and pursued the idea of the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City starting its own foundation. In the summer of 1977, the members of the Rotary Club of Salt Lake City approved the formation of the Salt Lake Rotary Foundation. A Board of Governors was selected and approved by the Club in October 1977. The Board of Governors consisted of: Clayton R. Williams, President; Ezekiel R. Dumke, Jr. Vice-President; Wendell M Smoot, Treasurer; John Dahlstrom, Secretary. Other members of the Board of Governors were Lue Bettilyon, Jules Lovinger, Byron Mock, Roland Wise and Harvey Glade. The Articles of Incorporation of the new Foundation were submitted to the Sate of Utah in October of 1977. In June 1978, the Internal Revenue Service officially granted a tax-exempt status to the foundation.
The Purpose
To accept charitable gifts and create an endowment to supplement the charitable services of Club 24. Today, the Foundation has over $1M in assets and in the year 2000 granted close to $60,000 directly to community non-profit organizations. The Foundation is also supporting the Youth Scholarship program in May. The Foundation Trustees created the Richard L. Evans Fellow to recognize individuals who have contributed $1,000 or more to the Foundation.

International Rotary Foundation
Contributions to Rotary Foundation funds enable Rotarians to carry out humanitarian and educational projects.
Donors may direct their gifts to three main funds: the Annual Programs Fund, which supports the Foundation’s humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs worldwide; the Permanent Fund, which provides an endowment; and the PolioPlus Fund.
Giving to The Rotary Foundation is a financially sound way for you to help others. In 2006, Charity Navigator gave the Foundation its top rating for fiscal responsibility.
Here are just some of the ways the Foundation uses contributions:
- $100 helps provide for one elementary school in Zambia
- $500 helps provide a small watch-repair business for six disabled workers in the Philippines
- $5,000 helps provide enough vaccine to immunize 10,000 children against polio
